Do you know the direction and strength of the geomagnetic field in the well bore?
High resolution MagVAR models are produced by combining satellite measurements with local ship and airborne magnetic surveys. Accurate specification of the geomagnetic field improves well placement by reducing ellipses of positional uncertainty.
Are your downhole surveys falling within specifications?
Measurement While Drilling (MWD) needs a geomagnetic reference model to convert magnetic azimuth to true azimuth and to validate the redundant dip and total field measurements. If an MWD survey lies outside of the specifications (green line for standard model), the survey has to be discarded. This usually indicates a defective MWD tool. But it could also be due to a poor geomagnetic reference model. Specification by a MagVAR model (red line) gives confidence in MWD surveys and improves corrections for drill string interference.
