About Us

Magnetic Variation Services LLC was founded in 2010 by Stefan Maus to provide services to the oil and gas industry that enhance the accuracy of wellbore placement in directional drilling. In 2014, we added Surcon Ltd as a fully-owned subsidiary, to provide real-time services. Together, the two companies provide the full range of survey management services, including well planning, In-Field Referencing (IFR1)Disturbance Field Monitoring (IFR2), Multi-Station Analysis (MSA), SAG and other advanced techniques.

Stefan Maus, Chief Scientist

Stefan Maus is a Senior Scientist at the University of Colorado. As the Geomagnetism Team Lead at NOAA’s National Geophysical Data Center from 2004 to 2013, he supervised the production of the World Magnetic Model generations 2005 and 2010 and developed the first High Definition Geomagnetic Model. He received a BSc in Mathematics in 1988 and a MSc in Geophysics in 1993, both from the University of Munich (Germany), followed by a PhD in 1997 at National Geophysical Research Institute in Hyderabad (India). After a Post-doc in Leeds, he taught Geophysics at the University of Braunschweig and at Free University Berlin. From 2000-2004 he was the specialist for crustal magnetic fields in the CHAMP satellite team at GeoForschungsZentrum Potsdam. Stefan continues to be involved in magnetic satellite missions, in particular as member of the Validation Team of the Swarm satellite mission of the European Space Agency. His primary interest lies in Geomagnetism, with a focus on producing magnetic field models for research and navigation from satellite, airborne and marine magnetic measurements. Stefan has authored and co-authored more than 100 peer-reviewed publications. In 2010, he founded Magnetic Variation Services LLC to provide advanced survey management services to the oil and gas industry.
